LLOYD E. MAYES

Lloyd E. Mayes is Director of Communications and Marketing for Right Beginnings. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Lloyd is an educator with deep roots in the Washington community, athletics and youth development. While attending D.C. Public Schools, Mr. Mayes was an average track athlete. However, three tears after H.S. graduation, his developing skill in basketball led him to the University of Minnesota Technical College in 1968, now UMC-Crookston. As the first African-American student at UMC, Mr. Mayes distinguished himself academically, as a consistent Dean's List student and excelled athletically, as an All-Conference athlete in basketball and track and field. Lloyd was also recognized as the schools Scholar Athlete, as well as, the Most Valuable Athlete in both sports for two consecutive years.

Lloyd returned to the District of Columbia, where he completed his education at The American University; followed by a professional career playing and coaching basketball in several countries, while traveling extensively throughout Europe. An injury ended his basketball career after several years.

Returning home to Washington, D.C., Lloyd pursued careers in the public and private sectors, but remained committed to his passion; teaching and mentoring young male and female students, especially athletes. He worked in the DC Public Schools serving as a high school teacher, academic dean, counselor and coach, before serving more than a decade as Education Director at a local Boys and Girls Club.
